- the interests of the farmers and people of
- the smaller towns; it holds the power balance
- between Liberals and Labor. It developed from
- about 1860, gained strength after the
- introduction of preferential voting (see
- vote) 1918, and has been in coalition with
- the Liberals from 1949.
